3 Steps to a Sensibly Cool Man Bun
This men’s favorite shows its staying power with form, function and unflappable style
We all know the guy who’s just the right amount of confident. He’s self-assured, but not at all arrogant; he’s present, and he knows where he’s headed; his clothes are on trend, but not perfect, and his hair?
It’s effortlessly cool and on point, because he’s wearing… a man bun.
And you can create this ubiquitous men’s hair style, thanks to our man-bun-wearing expert Ricardo Dinis, Aveda Global Artistic Director, Hair Cutting, who notes the man bun is here to stay.
“The man bun is the perfect style for those of us who prefer having length and like a more rugged, bohemian look when it comes to our hair, and it also serves to keep hair off the face,” Ricardo says.
Here, Ricardo offers three steps to a sensibly cool man bun:
1. Loosely gather hair up and away from the face and shoulders to meet in a ponytail position centered in the back of the head, just above the ears.
2. Haphazardly wrap hair length in a circular motion to meet at the base, forming the ‘bun’ of the man bun. The haphazard approach is the key part to achieving the look because if the bun looks too smooth or perfect it won’t look right.
3. Using an elastic designed specifically for hair, begin securing the bun in place by wrapping the elastic around the base, while ensuring the areas gathered to the base are still loose. This will alleviate any stress on strands from the style being too tight. Wrap the elastic until bun is secure.

The bohemian vibe comes from the speedy creation of the look. Not too perfect, not too structured. And for that placement, the higher the bun, the better, says Ricardo.
“Five years ago, I took a road trip through Northern Spain and by the end of that trip my hair was in a top knot. It happened more out of convenience for the trip, but then I realized I like the bun higher because it feels more modern and works with my life style and personality.”
