Meet Your Date with Density: Amla
Our Ayurvedic “it” herb for thicker hair, sourced from India
You may have noticed one of our newest family members, Thickening Tonic featuring the vitamin C-rich herb amla, also known as Indian gooseberry.
For generations this herb has been used in Ayurveda to promote countless health benefits, including balancing the stomach, enhancing brain power and clarifying skin. It’s also a power house in helping to create thick, lustrous locks, which is why it’s the key ingredient in our new Thickening Tonic.
We source certified organic amla from the Indian firm Nisarga Biotech, headquartered in Satara, India. Nisarga, meaning nature in Sanskrit, is based on smart business practices for producing effective herbs that are a part of a balanced ecosystem.
“Organic farming is not just about farming but about being a human being to others,” says Girish Soman, CEO and co-founder of Nisarga Biotech. “It is about cleaning up the chemicals and pesticides that affect our ecosystem.”
Nisarga Biotech grows Ayurvedic herbs using organic and biodynamic agriculture on its own farms, and through its farming partners. The firm gains partners by encouraging farmers to convert to organic
One such farm directly converted by Nisarga Biotech is the small amla farm in Sangli, India. This farm’s time-honored cultivation methods are combined with modern organic techniques to grow this amazing Ayurvedic ingredient in ways that will preserve the planet, honor the farmers and keep us all in better health. Local villagers harvest amla by hand, remove the seeds, dry the fruit pulp and send it to Nisarga Biotech for next steps.
To learn more about why we chose amla as the star ingredient in the new Thickening Tonic, take a look here as our video story introduces the Doctors Upadhyay, our partners in herb discovery, and amla’s path to Nisarga Biotech:
