HAIR AND MAKEUP TIPS TO UPDATE YOUR LOOK

No one is immune to the back-to-school mood the coming of autumn brings. Many seek to indulge in the spirit of the season not by sharpening pencils, but by sharpening their look with a new lip color or hair color update. To guide us through the latest fall trends we chatted with Bruno Elorrioroz, Aveda Advanced Artistic Director in London and Janell Geason, Aveda Global Artistic Director, Makeup

Their suggestions will surely inspire just the right beauty tweak you’ll need to start the season off stylishly.

Skin Care as Makeup

The range of lip and eye looks for Autumn/Winter Fashion Week 2017 ran the gamut from winged eyes to berry-stained lips, but nearly all designers requested radiant, fresh skin.

Makeup artists responded by spending extra time masking models and using certain skin care products as highlighters. Notes Janell, “I spent a lot of time prepping skin backstage at the Hellesy Autumn/Winter 2017 show during New York Fashion Week, if the skin didn’t look nice, nothing else would work.”

Janell suggests using two of her backstage staples, the Aveda Tulasāra™ Wedding Masque as a primer to plump and soothe skin, and the Aveda Tulasāra™ Radiant Oleation Oil as a highlighter to make skin “look fresh and alive.”  

Subtle Chic

Says Bruno, “Playing with not just one shade, but two to four similar hues create more texture, allowing hair to catch the light easily.”

Getting creative with tones also keeps subtle hair color fresh. Says Bruno, “You can apply a single-processed, vibrant copper color then mute it a bit with a deep purple. The color feels modern and a bit smudged.”

Pop Art

Going bold with your hair color for fall is always an option. Pop Art-inspired colors like orange, red, yellow and even green and blue all make a powerful statement.

A Playful Palette

Our love affair with all shades of pink continues. Aveda Artist and Educator Jo McKay loves to use this color as a tool to add sophisticated dimension. “Pink and other delicate pastels have become so beautiful to implement into other colors. I love to find the perfect hue to use on blondes— either a pastel pink or a strong neon— as a modern way to play with the trend. Rather than adding brown for dimension on blondes, I opt for pink as the contrasting element.”

Apricot shades are also gaining popularity. Predicts David Adams, Owner of FOURTEENJAY in New York City, “We are going to see last year’s rose gold turn into more of an orange-based color we are calling ‘blorange.’ It's a color a lot of people are afraid of, but works on a surprising number of skin types.”

Ian Michael Black, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Hair Color, suggests going full on lavender this season, but with a twist. “Violet is a shade that can be very flattering for a lot of people, and to make it work I create soft pinkish undertones to keep the color both soft and feminine,” Ian says.

Feel the Warmth

“We’ve seen a huge wave of people embracing warmth in their hair color,” notes Glen Coco Oropeza, Los Angeles-based Aveda Artist. He suggests brunettes amp up their richness with copper and marmalade shades as seen above with this smart bob complemented by terra-cotta tones.

For blondes Glen likes to add strawberry, beige and champagne hues for a fresh and sunny vibe. “To ensure your blonde gets the perfect warmth, find a colorist that uses Aveda’s 96% naturally-derived Enlightener™ Blonde Finish Protective Toners,” Glen says.

INDIA'S HALDI RITUAL INSPIRES OUR NEWEST SKINCARE

 

When is your skin more radiant than on your wedding day? While you may think that the answer is a definitive “never,” it’s actually possible to get that luminous glow year-round. But it takes a little doing. Namely, the consistent use of skin care brightens and nourishes skin while providing anti-aging benefits over time.

Aveda’s newest products, Tulasāra™ Wedding Masque Overnight and Wedding Masque Eye Overnight are here to help you look wedding day radiant all year long. What makes these new products so wonderfully unique is that they were modeled after the gorgeous Haldi beauty ritual, which is a key part of the Hindu wedding ceremony. Not only do both products deliver wedding-day skin, they do so inspired by an approach that has been time-tested and proven for generations.

“Haldi refers to the paste that is used in the Haldi ceremony, which is part of a traditional Indian wedding,” explains Divyesh Patel, Director of Skincare Research and Development at Aveda. The paste is a mix of turmeric, chickpea powder, and rose water (Haldi means turmeric in Sanskrit). In the ceremony, married family members spread the paste onto exposed parts (face, hands, arms, legs, feet) of the bride and groom the day before the wedding as an offering of good luck. It is said that if the bride or groom touches an unmarried person of marrying age with the Haldi, he or she will be the next to tie the knot.

The paste itself is bright yellow, representing the color of fire in Hinduism, and, in the case of the Haldi Ceremony, wards off evil spirits and omens on your special day —so it is washed off the skin after setting for three or four hours. “Turmeric is a known skin brightener, so the Haldi also helps the bride and groom look their best for their wedding day,” says Divyesh.

While Aveda’s Tulasāra™ Wedding Masque Overnight and Wedding Masque Eye Overnight do not need to be used on the eve of your wedding (although they can be, of course!), they share some ingredients with the Haldi ritual and serve a similar purpose: they help you wake up to brighter, more luminous skin.

The formulas of the masques contain Curcumonoids, an extract of turmeric (don’t worry, it’s colorless and won’t stain your skin or your sheets). Also featured in both the ritual and the formula: potato and tomato stem cells, which are known for their restorative properties. “Potato and tomato slices are sometimes placed on top of the Haldi in the ceremony,” explains Divyesh. In addition, the formulas contain apricot seed oil, an Ayurvedic ingredient that helps repair the lipid barrier of the skin, working with the skin cell’s natural circadian rhythm to help support skin’s natural repair process that happens at night.

Divyesh recommends users apply a thick coating of the masques and allow the formula to sink in overnight. There’s no need to rinse in the a.m. Adds Divyesh, “applying a product that helps brighten overnight is an effective way to wake up radiant, as your skin shifts into repair mode while you sleep.”

Then, wake up in the morning to wedding day skin.
